The functions of SURCON are:

1. Determining who are Surveyors for the purposes of the Act;

2. Determining what standards of knowledge and skill are to be attained by persons seeking to become registered as members of the profession of Surveying and reviewing those standards from time to time as circumstances may require;

3. Securing in accordance with the provisions of the Act the establishment and maintenance of a registrar of persons entitled to practice the profession and publication, from time to time, of list of such persons;

4. Regulating and controlling the practice of the profession in all its ramifications;

5. Maintaining, in accordance with the Act, of discipline within the profession.

6. Performing the other functions conferred upon the Council by the Act.

The members of Council shall consist of:

1. A president who shall be Surveyor to be appointed by the president Commander- in – chief of the Armed Forces;

2. Five persons to be appointed by the President, Commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of whom at least one shall be the Surveyor-General of the Federation and the others from among other interests in the field of Surveying (including the Armed Forces) which in the opinion of the President, Commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces ought to be represented;

3. The Surveyor-General of each of the States in the Federation;

4. Twelve persons elected by the Nigerian Institution of Surveyors in the manner for the time being provided in its constitution; and

5. Four persons appointed by the President Commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces from universities or other institutions offering courses leading to an approved qualification in Surveying, no two of whom shall come from the same university or institution.

The Committees are:

1. Surveyors Disciplinary committee

2. Rules and Regulations Committee

3. Registration Committee

4. Education Committee

5. Examinations Committee

6. Human Capital Development Committee

7. Finance and general Purpose Committee

A Surveyor is a person registered by SURCON to carry out the profession of Surveying

A person shall be entitled to be registered as a Surveyor if:

1. He passes the qualifying examination for registration recognized or conducted by the Council under the Act

2. Not being a Nigerian, he holds a qualification granted: Provided that the other country accords Nigerian professional Surveyors the same reciprocal treatment and that he satisfies the Council that he has had sufficient practical experience as a Surveyor

The other cadres of the Profession are:

1. The pupil

2. The technologist

3. The technician

The criteria for qualification are:

1. A person shall be entitled to be registered as a pupil Surveyor if:

1. He holds a certificate recognized by council and has not had two years post-qualification practical experience in the profession; or

2. He has passed an examination approved by the Council and has not had two years post –qualification practical experience in the profession

2. A person shall be entitled to be registered as a Survey technologist or a Survey technician under the Act if he passed an examination approved , from time to time, by the Council and has had two years practical experience as a Survey technologist or a Survey technician in an office approved by the Council or has HND or ND Surveying & Geoinformatics respectively.
